This the response of the same two commands when sound isn't working:

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
mfraser at Rachael:~$ lsmod |grep snd

soundcore 7264 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 9156 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

Also the error message I get is from Phonon:
The audio playback device NVidia (ALC883) does not work.
Falling back to.

While I'm asking about audio, how do I remove audio drivers that I no longer
need?
