No desk top computer?

I use a laptop exclusively for most things. I have a desktop but it is reserved for music and video production and therefore doesn't get 'tweaked' or get any software other than the essentials installed on it.
Anything to consider.. research! Linux and laptop compatability can be hit and miss. I've always liked Sony laptops and they seem well supported. If you can find a friendly local PC dealer, ask him if you can put the Kubuntu live CD in it to check that it boots before you buy it. I've had luck with this approach in the smaller local shops, I won't buy it if I can't test it first, - the big chains looked at me like I'd just asked if I could install a virus... guess who got my business :)
