Why not use sudo aptitude update and
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade ?

It will not install if there is dependency issues or conflicts. When 
later packages are moved to the repositories and are ready to handle 
these conflicts, then the safe-upgrade will install these packages. It 
will also let you know the 'score' and if negative, will ask if you want 
to proceed. I do not proceed if negative.

Also, a good time to stress that alpha's, beta's and ppa's are not 
recommended for 'production systems'. I do not have this kde4.4 ppa or 
any ppa in my karmic and did not participate in this thread until 
aptitude, apt-get came into the picture.
