I don't actually think you can do anything apart from what you've
already done. If you really need this bug fixed, the only way to get
the devs to wake up is to gather some users affected by this problem
and keep bugging the devs. If you can live with it (as most of the
affected users seem to be able to), you can just ignore it.

The problem lies in the architecture of KIO slaves and the fact that
URLs don't support multiple protocol specifications. This bug is
therefore somewhat hard to fix properly, as long as the handling KIO
slave is determined through the URL.

The one thing you can actually do is switch to a current version of
KDE 4 - that'll render the bug invisible. KDE 4's architecture is a
little cleaner as it is still relatively young. A switch will,
however, cause a lot of other problems, so it's something you should
really think about before doing it.
Oh, and the switch really won't fix the bug - I can't open a .war
from a Windows share, for example.

To me, diagnosing a problem is quite satisfying in itself, and if it
serves to excuse my earlier insulting remarks, that would be all
I'd ask for. :-)
