When I got my first router I had trouble with my 2 MS windows
machines and their browsers/mail hanging up and going slow.
I finally tracked it down to 3 firewalls messing each other up -
one on each comp. and one in the router - all firing up automatically
at boot-up.
I decided to leave the router fire-wall running and ditched the 2
running on my windows machines. Of the 3 firewalls the router's was
by far the easiest to understand anyway.
Since then I've installed various linux OSes and win7 on other comps
I've acquired and the 1st thing I do after installing an OS is check that
there is no fire-wall running on it.
So I have only one fire-wall running on the router filtering the outside
world only. This means that I have minimum hassle with internet
communications inside my local network.
I know this doesn't answer your question but it might be a solution to
your problem.
