getting rid of the tree view of a message

Thanks Perry.  I'll have to see if I can find that--I thought I'd
looked everywhere, but didn't see it.

I solved the problem for now by editing the kmailrc by hand.  I found
the MIME structure stuff and said "never".  But I'd rather find the
options you mentioned.  I'll look when I get home.
