Actually you can't compare the two as the codebase is pretty
different. What they did was introduce a conceptual separation
between virtual desktops and the widgets on the desktops. The
background just so happened to be put on the widget side, and as
those aren't dependant on the current virtual desktop, neither is the
background...
The idea behind that separation is actually quite nifty, it just
wasn't thought through properly.
