and earlier messages say you could run the Live CD but not install from
it and "Check disc for defects" failed.
Just for fun: if you run the Live CD what is the output from
'sudo lshw -c disk' ?
Do your optical drives still work in windows?
Could there be a problem with the cable to the optical drives?
( https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/88821 , last entry, the
OP also got an 'sudo lshw -c disk' output listing just the hard disk).
