CD and DVD RW not detected‏

Just some info from my system. I issued the command in 9.10 using the 
2.6.32 kernel installed from the Lucid repositories, my 2 hd's and 3 rom 
drives are all ata/ide (I don't have any sata devices) and all 5 devices 
are displayed by the command. I can try it with the current Karmic 
kernel but have to reboot to do it.
