If you haven't use your sledgehammer yet.....

O when you do the sudo fdisk,
do you see an asterisk at the boot column at sda1?

O when you mentioned grub.conf file in earlier message, what file are 
you talking about? there is no file named grub.conf

O If it is really a bios or grub problem, converting to grub2 will solve 
this problem.
