Can't detect an external 500GB HDD

Hi,

Got new an external hard disk drive with USB and eSATA ports.
When I plug it in lsusb doesn't detect this new device.
I have two boxes Kubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.27 and Fedora 11, 2.6.30 I think; 
none can see this device.
On another machine running WinXP the device properly recognized means not 
faulty.

Any help would appreciate.
