I'm using Alsa, as pure and as pristine as I can manage it. BUT, if you
try to remove libpulseXXX it'll remove your entire KDE desktop and even
graphical apps. But, just within the last week, mplayer can't find alsa.
Xine is working fine. I had everything working JUST LIKE I LIKE IT, and
now it's blown up. <sighs> This is what gets old. I would dearly love to
see Pulseaudio be an "extra" and not a system depend. Ric
