X falls back to VESA after newest update

This morning I got updates for my Intel drivers and I thought that finally I 
could get rid of some of the bugs and maybe X would enable DRI. After restart 
I was greeted with a login screen running 640X480 and no way to set it any 
higher. At the same time the fonts are so fuzzy that I can hardly read what 
I'm writing.

Gotta admit that I have 
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main
enabled in sources.list. I know that I could probably just comment that out 
and do an update and upgrade, but I would like to get the newest drivers 
working if possible.

Searching thru Xorg.0.log I found these lines that might explain what is 
happening but doesn't give me a clue about what to do.
