Well it's not the pop-ups. I usually kill the process before they arrive. It's 
the +20 minutes it's crunching my HD. I just want to do "sudo aptitude update 
&& sudo aptitude safe-upgrade".
I *really* hope the update notifier is optimized in Karmic.
