May be what you mean is unichrome. Openchrome is an opensource driver,
trying to support  VIA chipset. But from my experience, openchrome is
more reliable compared to unichrome:

I have had a hard time with both card (VIA and ATI).  For now I will
stick to (onboard) intel graphic card, which is normally supported
well in linux. So far I do not have any issue yet with intel graphic
card.
