This might sound dumb but it often works better than a scanner. Use a
digital camera. Most have a macho feature so you can take great close
ups. I do this with mine when doing research in the library. It is
faster and easier that any other way I have found plus you have a
portable viewer at the same time.

I use a canon powershot a520.
