There shouldn't be any need to use K3B any more. Just open the CD in Dolphin and you'll see directories for PCM, OGG, and MP3. Open those directories and just copy the files somewhere. The quality of the ripping is controlled by the Audio CDs section of the KDE control panel thing.
I've never, ever, been able to get K3B to work properly but this method works perfectly for me.
OTOH, if you are intent on using K3B, have you run the K3B Setup utlity in the KDE control panel? That sets up some permissions for you that KDE seems to need. Might help.
