KDE Console freezes arbitrarily under Karmic/AMD64 - GNOME unaffected

I'm afraid I have given up and reverted to Gnome until such time as KDE
works for me.
Yesterday the system worked almost flawlessly under KDE. The only time
it crashed was in the evening when I closed down all applications and
attempted to start Konqueror. Then, as if on cue the system froze about
two seconds into loading.
Today, on the other hand, was a nightmare. First of all it took three
or four attempts to get past the KDE startup. Then it froze two seconds
into loading Kontact. Then it worked with Kontact and Firefox runing for
all of twenty minutes before freezing in the middle of entering
something in an online form on Firefox. Then it froze when I clicked a
link from akregator.
I logged into Gnome and, out of curiosity, attempted to load Kontact
within Gnome. Yes, the system froze two seconds into the load. This is
the nearest thing to consistency I've found - this two seconds into
loading Kontact or Konqueror.
This is a shame, because quite frankly when it's working properly, KDE
knopcks Gnome into the proverbial cocked hat.
