Same here. New monitor. Out of range - duh. It's the new grub2 doing
its things. I liked to see the boot messages scroll by, and
accordingly deleted the old grub stanza part 'quiet splash' in the
menu.lst file.
That file isn't in grub2 anymore. Instead ther's a grub.cfg - but
don't touch it. It is generated anew each time the system is
updated. Instead, open the file
/etc/default/grub with any tect editor as root. Then, edit the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="gfxpayload=text"
as shown.
Save the file and then: 'sudo update-grub'
On your next boot, your monitor will still be out of range, but show
you the boot messages in big, ugly text. At least you can follow the
boot process and see what happens. It will probably boot OK into
graphics mode with no further ado.

install kubuntu! Think I'll try Mandriva again, kubuntu karmic has
acquired too many fluffy features for my tired old brain to remember the
work-arounds for. brian
