slow

kubuntu karmic is rather slow on my laptop, compared to hardy (kde3.5)
Windows take seconds to be raised or lowered, Auto hide panels take 
seconds to show up. 
My ram is 1.5 GB and the swap area is 4GB, used only up to 1/4 
I suspect that slowness is due the graphic card, intel 915, but i can't 
believe that the more recent driver is worse the the old one.

Any hints to check and tune my system?
