Copying hidden files

hat is the best way to backup the home directory?  I found quite a few
options over the internet, but not sure what is the easiest.

Don't know about 'best' but I've used the following for 30 years or more, it's
certainly quick. In a Konsole, do
----------------------------------------------------------------------

brian%cd /home
brian%cp -ruv brian /media/kbuuser | grep denied | more

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In this instance 'brian' is my home directory and 'kbuuser' is an auto-mounted 
partition on an external USB HD. Prints a list of files cp had problems copying.
I run it any time I remember, the 1st time is slow but subsequent times a pretty
quick.

The expert experts can probably pick holes in it but it's never let me down
as far as I know.
