gvfs what is it?

I'm not familiar with gvfs. Is it something crucial to the system?
Anyone care to enlighten me (us) about it??  

p/s I'm trouble shooting a problem I'm having with a java application
that the devel team for Sun's Wonderland project who note the server
undo karmic is running slow, and sometimes not at all. So, I'm trouble
shooting with a shotgun to try to eliminate any process not totally
needed, to see if that frees up the application. Ric
