Problems with 9.04 -> 9.10 upgrade

As the upgrade completed, I think I saw a message flash by about a Plasma 
crash.  In any case, the login screen appears, but when I try to log in, the 
background appears, the desktop tries to draw the desktop folder, and then 
it all disappears.  I get the X cursor and then I am back at KDM.  In short, 
it is not possible to log in.  I did a clean install on a spare disk and 
copied over the .kde hierarchy so that I could at least run Knode to send 
this message.  After googling, I conclude that no one else has experienced 
the same problem with the upgrade.  Nevertheless, I wonder whether anyone 
has any suggestions how to fix the problem in the upgraded system.  I am 
hoping to avoid reinstalling all my applications to the clean system, which 
took me many days when I did it for 9.04.
