Upgrade 8.04->9.10 fails: crash to tty, claims can't mount rootfs

The jump from _Kubuntu_ 8.04 to 9.10 should work, according to 
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KarmicUpgrades/Kubuntu/8.04>. I can't 
say if it does though because I don't have any 8.04 system left.
