I may be being terribly naive here, but I had terrible problems getting any 
java stuff to run on my jaunty amd64. In the end I purged all mention of 
java from my OS, including my home/.java directory, and I did a 'sudo find
 / -iname java' to make sure no java was lurking. Then installed the latest 
sun-java package with kpackagekit and after that I had only minor setup 
tweaks  as far as I remember. 
 I haven't tested all of the java functionality but certainly my firefox
java plug-in works fine on karmic.
