Optiplex Session Logout --> No KDM/X11

[ Dell Optiplex 755; ATI RV610 (Radeon HD 2400 XT); Kubuntu 9.04 ]

Whenever I "logout" of my GUI session, I am returned to a virtual
console (i.e., X11 is *gone*). I can run 'startx' to restore the
prior session, but logging out again returns me to a console (I, in
fact, am never really logged out).

Searching archives, I've found others reporting similar problems (but
mainly involving multiple monitors). I could find no real "solution".

The end of "Xorg.0.log" contains this:

       0: /usr/bin/X(xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x813518b]
       1: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x55) [0x80c7be5]

       6: /usr/bin/X(main+0x266) [0x8072196]
       7: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe5) [0xb7cb3775]
       8: /usr/bin/X [0x80717a1]

Prior to the 9.04 install, the machine was running 8.04 and it worked
better. When I logged out, I saw a "garbled" screen and could restart
X11 using C-A-<backspace>. Even that functionality has now gone away.

Is anyone successfully using Jaunty on a Optiplex 755 with the Radeon board??

Thanks for you comments/suggestions!
