That's right!

sudo apt-get remove --purge 2.6.24-16-*

You forgot "*" sign at the end but it's very important. I'm not sure this command will work but you
can give a try. I use currently Kubuntu 8.04.2 LTS myself.

You can found the following packages:
linux-headers-2.6.24-16*
linux-image-2.6.24-16-*
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16*
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-*

These packages are "related components", which may installed in your system. Related means packages,
which belongs to kernel and has therefore same beginning in package name: "linux".

Certainly, you can use Adept and I also said that. You can use Adept to find these packages and see,
what else it finds.

Complicated? Please read further:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto - here are all those parameters well explained

There https://help.ubuntu.com/ - you can search the word grub and see, what it finds.

As linux offers much more configuration options and possibilities - this may seem to be complicated.
But if you dont' have such possibilities, then you just cannot do anything if needed. This is what
Microsoft probably offer to you...
