For me, running "system-config-printer" was the easiest solution. But it is 
a GNOME program and you may have to install it manually. Nevertheless, the 
printer will appear in KDE, too.

In console, I installed hplip using apt-get and then 'kdesudo hp-setup'
in the resultant gui just select the type of printer connection(it
defaults to the one you want) and keep answering questions until it
prints test page, et voila.
