Namaste, Alan is right, Xubuntu, especially with the latest 4.6 version is great. But 256 MB is very low particularly with 2.8GHz dual core processor. I would suggest you add more RAM, with the current low prices of RAM, I think it would be the optimal thing to do. Then install Xubuntu or Kubuntu.

I had run Kubuntu  3 years ago on 256 RAM with pentium 3, (yes, you heard me right) and I think it is faster than my son's XP with 1G RAM, hyper threading, and some super graphics card.

If, you don't add RAM's, the newer Kubuntu versions will not run too smoothly (install using alternate CD). Try out Xubuntu. If you want leaner and faster distro, use Puppy Linux or DSL (damn small linux).
