Multiple desktops

Until quite recently, compiz and KDE virtual desktops were incompatible
with one another, in the sense that you had to use compiz virtual desktops,
and the number of KDE virtual desktops always remained at unity.
I can't recall when this changed. Quite possibly it was 8.10.
Prior to that, you needed to decide which kind of virtual desktop you were
going to use, and if you wanted to use KDE ones, then you had to turn off
compiz. At least, that's how I recall it was.
Usually, the easiest thing to do was just to turn off compiz (that's what I
did, anyway).
