Aha, I remember using dpkg-reconfigure too, but don't remember on which
bit of the problem, alas I was listening to cricket commentary at the
time and not paying proper attention. Looking at the history of actions
in my terminal reveals it was xserver-xorg that was reconfigured, as it
had gotten into a mess also and lost the nvidia support. Then I did
autoremove to clear out the rubbish left by my messing around and then
installed kdm. Today my computer is "all is well" (hehe, my computer
has become spiritual!).
