upgrade 8.04 -> 9.04+kde3: how?

If I were in your position, I would act as follows:

STEP 1
Make a back-up of all your data files at another HD, another PC or an
external HD.

STEP 2
Put this 'semi-official' distro at a live CD:
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Kde3/Jaunty

STEP 3:
Use this live CD to:
partition your HD in a section for the distro you already have and a
second section where you install Jaunty with KDE 3.
