1) Please don't top post, and also, try to turn HTML off in GMail (if 
you can't figure it out, try http://tinyurl.com/p3ytgz )

2) Have you clicked the "capture" checkbox under the microphone? It is 
only used for input if that box is checked. Make sure all the other 
inputs have the box unchecked as well, otherwise you might get 
interference from them.
