Have you tried inserting a cd or dvd and then start K3b, the 
cd/dvd-burning application? For whatever reason that ALWAYS finds my 
cd/dvd media even when "polling is disabled" as mentioned earlier.

Once K3b has "found" the cd/dvd I could then access it via Dolphin or 
Konqueror. Dont ask me why, just something to try.
