Steven,
I once ran an online program that installed Nautilus on my computer
as part of its funtion.  That really hosed my kubuntu desktop and I
ended up with a half/half (k)ubuntu mess.  I ended up deleting Nautilus
and that changed nothing. I finally reloaded kubuntu and got my kde
desktop back.
