Thank you Lindsay, I didn't expect anyone to say anything like that.  I almost 
let some advice get in that may have changed the results.  I feel so 
unqualified to resist the great advice on the List.  Nonetheless, I wanted to 
try, just in case it would work.  With my declining memory part of the 
decision involved that in the choices I ended up with.  Now I just have to 
wait and see if it is stable.  Couldn't be having more fun right now though.

I have tried and not been disappointed with ext4, while others have not been 
so fortunate, but the setup now, seems to be a great fit.  Plus, I am sure the 
recent updates probably are responsible for most of it.  Even the normal 
opening of an application pops open, and so fast.  I think the OS likes the 
setup.

I did not use the GUI for any installation either and did not require help.  I 
am so grateful to you all.  It seems like I am starting to remember things.  I 
don't believe in bad luck, even though it may seem like I should.  I just love 
this stuff.
