Here is the biggest thing holding the average home user back from
linux, the lack of
games that they perceive as necessary to use.  WoW comes to mind, as
well as many others.

As far as browsing and emailing and document writing and ad nausea-um,
then linux would work
perfectly fine.

The other problem is what causes all of the virii on windows in the
first place, one user account with
admin privileges, the average windows user does not want to  be
bothered with entering a password to install something.
I hear windows users complain now about vista asking for confirmation
before running programs and in the same breath complain
about the mal-ware that has infected their machine.

Nuff said.
