i quite a gree. it's an ubuntu package. more info in
http://packages.ubunut.com/intrepid/python/update-notifier-kde
seems to be maintained by the ubuntu core developers, and it's a
python program. it seriously needs a rewrite. to be honest, i haven't
seen any notifier written perfectly so far. this notifier is a hog and
slow, suse's is also aweful and lacks proper communication.
in KDE, the program checks too much with the system, it needs to check
the APT database like every 30 minutes only.
