nvidia driver problems

This shows it's using the 'nv' driver (i.e. the free one, not the restricted one).

What do you get if you do

uname -a

sudo dkms status

You should see, if you've installed from restricted drivers and not the nvidia download, an installed nvidia module listed against the kernel version mentioned in uname -a. If not, the installation is broken.
