ATI driver problems

How well does open source driver perform? Do you use kde4 desktop 
effects? Have you ever had them force-disabled by system due to low 
performance? What are magic glxgears numbers for your card/driver? How 
do i install open source driver? Ouch, too many questions.. stopping 
that :-)
