Enabled Wifi when there is no wire

My laptop has a switch on it which turns off the wifi, so do my office 
people's laptops and also the printer.  Is this not a normal practice?   I 
actually turn off the wifi on my laptop to save battery life when it isn't in 
use.  My battery only lasts about five hours without recharging so I carry 
another charged battery for my laptop in case and of course invested in an 
automobile charger so I can plug the laptop in while driving from place to 
place.
