You might want to go to a console window (not X) and issue:

dpkg-reconfigure  xserver-xorg

This will run you through a series of questions on how you want the X-server 
configured and included in those questions are a bunch about extra key 
settings.

It will ask you about some settings files that are contained <it will tell you 
where>  so you might want to move to another console session   alt-F<key>  to 
look in the directories mentioned.

I ran this about 5 times yesterday trying different keyboards because I have a 
problem with my left-arrow key (doesn't work at all) and although it didn't 
fix my problem,  nothing bad happened either.
