Kubuntu re-install without loss of data

I do not know about Windows XP, but you can copy your complete system
with "sudo cp / place_to_copy".

If it is just user data that you want to back up (not programs), then
you can just copy "/home/user". You can even get creative with tar to
save space, and encrypt the data for offsite storage.
