Buying a new portable

Hi

I will shortly buy a new portable. before I do so, I would want to check 
whether its specifications are supported by Kubuntu 8.10 (KDE4.2).

I especially want some of the desktop effects (shading, greying out non active 
apps, alt-tab switching) to work as well as eg GoogleEarth and Torcs or 
TuxRacer.

On my current system (DELL Inspiron 9400 with ATI X1400), the desktop effects 
do not work together with the (I suppose) OpenGL apps.

I would also want 1920x1200 resolution and maybe the possibility to work wth 2
