When precisely do you get the error?

 From what? From the Bios?
 From grub?, from Linux?, from X?
Does it boot? or not?

I am just asking because apparently you do have (or had?) a working KDE 
available, otherwise I cannot imagine how you had worked on the mail 
configuration.;-))
