have you tried removing the broken plasmoids and tried re-adding them
back?
If that does not work, delete your ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc and
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc, then log out/log in (this will set your
desktop to the defaults, however) There were changes in plasma that make
4.1 plasmoids/palsmoid configurations incompatible with 4.2, and usually
removing/re-adding the offending ones does the trick.
Another thing to do is to make sure you disable the ppa 4.2 repo if you have
the backports repo (unsupported updates) enabled, there may be a few
packages that didn't update/upgrade.(it doesn't sound like you do, though)
4.2 recently made it into intrepid-backports

probably because backports are unsupported, I would guess, without seeing
the actual bug report on launchpad
