Matt, wouldn't the active package show itself on the panel at the bottom of
the screen. Is there a command that would indicate the running applications?

The panel has changed lately. All the icons have moved to the left. I
currently don't see open applications, but on-screen, the only ones I see are
this reply, Kmail and three plasmoids, Disk Space, Digital Clock, and Notes.

I do not have any programs open that work root. I will open adept and try to
install something before I close this email, to see if there is conflict
between to Apt type packages.

When I tried to open Adept, at the title bar at the top it says Adept <2>,
however, i cannot see Adept <1> anywhere, and the open package says the
following:

Could not obtain a write lock on the cache, falling back to read-only mode.
You won't be able to install, remove or upgrade packages. However, you can
still search in the package database and browse packages.
It appears that another process is running, which holds the write lock on the
database. You first need to close that program and then restart Adept to gain
write access.

Apparently you are right, but Adept <1> doesn't appear anywhere so that I can
restore it to the desktop.
