No sound, Kubuntu Intrepid KDE 4.2

I just rebooted.  There was a first choice then safe mode, then another 
choice.  I tried that other choice, it said it had 69 upgrades.  I made a 
mental note of that but did not change anything, because I don't understand 
what you are talking about.  When I booted again, I entered the first option.  
When it opened it said I had 69 upgrades too, so I suppose both are one and 
the same kernels.  I checked for sound on both startups and neither Intrepid 
boots have sound.  I am in the first intrepid boot right now, have installed 
the 69 updates, but still no sound.

When I boot to the Hardy partition, I have sound and normal operation.  I did 
notice that in the Intrepid bootups the computer no longer behaved sluggish, 
so something has changed, even before the updates, but it was nothing that 
happened due to my efforts.  If I was able to make myself clear in this 
email, can you think of or see any other possibility for restoring the sound?
