wrong architecture

I have a .deb which exits the install with 'wrong architecture 'i386''

I've looked around my intrepid but can't find any command which returns
what my 'architecture' is. I have a suspicion that it might be 'x86_64' as I
have an AMD 64 bit processor.
Can anybody set me on the right lines? Can I do anything on my machine to
sort it or do I just get onto the supplier and get them to see if they
can produce
a .deb for the correct architecture, whatever that actually is.
