Appendum, sorry, forgot a small but important entry to the grub menu.lst if you want to boot from a separate drive: Mapping.

Besides chainloading +1, add this

               map (hd0) (hd1)
               map (hd1) (hd0)

(hd1) would be the removable hdd rack or whatever your computer says it is.
